In the Miners strike of 1984-1985 HAWAY THE LASSES became a slogan that symbolised the miners’ wives movement in the North East.
This banner, in collections at Woodhorn Museum, Northumberland, is for Brenkley Support Group and was marched at both local and national events as a sign of solidarity with the strike.
Haway/howay – come along! Make an effort! You can do better than that! Haway thi lads! (ancient and very hopeful Geordie ‘war-cry’)
Lass – girl, woman, wife
